Renovating the Cortijo – A Pictorial Story

Renovating the Cortijo

Renovating the Cortijo in the low Alpujarras was a labour of idiotic impulsive foolishness. We absolutely loved it! This is the story of that first year in Andalusia.

Some of the pictures were taken on iPhones, I’ve painstakingly gathered them together, sometimes raiding ancient social media sites for dimly remembered images. It was an unexpected pleasure putting this record together and when I look at it now, I think renovating that Cortijo was a real achievement. We speak better Spanish now and if I had to do it all again I’d do it differently. In fact if anyone reading this is thinking of going down the same road, do get in touch, we’d be delighted to offer the lessons learned!

Your home is beautiful. We expect to finalise the purchase of a house at La Rabita this week. We intend to retire to it in a couple of years. It requires reconnection to electric & water. It’s shell is sound. It needs refurbishment. New external & internal doors, rewire, kitchen, bathroom, tiling. Do you have any advice, contacts in the trade or details of shops/ trade centres please.

The best advice is to try and use local Spanish trades as much as possible. The quality is excellent, prices reasonable and the good word of mouth you will get is worth its weight in gold. Go to a local gestoria (office that provides translation, work contacts, legal help etc) or forums to find local people that have already gone through the renovation process and get recommendations whose work you can check. There are good people and there are sharks, so be aware that you are bringing new money into the community and know that some people don’t look past that! If you are careful you’ll have a great experience, we love it here, good luck with it all!
